The story of Mamoun’s had a happy ending, but not so for another St. Marks Place institution. Marty “The Sock Man” Rosen is shuttering his doors this Friday, January 15. Today, we caught up with the beloved grump, who confirmed rumors of the closing and told us he’d been socked with a rent hike.
“This is the East Village,” he said, in the midst of rearranging the funky socks and tights he has long sold to everyone from neighborhood punks to Chloe Sevigny. “I don’t want to leave this block. As bad as it is, I don’t want to leave. I don’t know what to do.” He’ll be looking for a new space, but in the meantime you can still order online.
On Facebook he posted a note, saying so long– but not farewell– to all his fans:
The Sock Man wishes all of you all a Happy and healthy New Year! Unfortunately, after 30 years on The block,we will no longer call 27 St.Mark’s Place our home. This will take place in the next week.Thank you from the bottom of my heart for all of your support in making my business what it is. You never know where our new home will be, but in the meantime The Sock Man is still open for business at

If you’re into nostalgia shopping, this is probably the week to do it. Over on the Bowery, the words “liquidation!” and “50 percent off” now dance in bright pink tape across Patricia Field’s storefront. Last week, the designer and club-kid matron announced on Facebook that her shop would probably close “around the end of February- mid March 2016.” Here’s the latest update:
As you have always been so positive in your support for my brand, I wanted to reach out and update you on the progress of our liquidation sale, which started on Saturday, Jan. 2.
The weekend was literally a wonderful mob scene. Actually, the most touching reaction from so many people, has been a mix of sadness, appreciation and well wishes.
The truly positive response gave me the idea of supporting my many designers by inviting them to participate in our sale with additional pieces, to keep the momentum of great prices going throughout the month.
Many of our designers have responded positively to this idea. As such, I will be replenishing my stock at 50% off, with great buys from small designers and new one-of-a-kind pieces.
